La Dame Aux Camélias French Edition Alexandre Dumas fils 9781271345625 Books
A high school English teacher I once had told us that there was an old literary tradition of the virtuous prostitute. La Dame aux Camélias falls into that category. Our heroine, Marguerite, is an upper-class courtesan, but she does redeem herself in the eyes of her lover, Armand, and of our unnamed narrator who hears Armand's story. To say any more would amount to a spoiler, but the author is telling us that the love is genuine—we can tell that by her actions. As in any love story, there are a number of misunderstandings that need to be worked out. At the same time, hearing the tale from Armand's somewhat naive perspective, we find the description of his young love very appealing. This does not have the lively action that the novels of Alexandre Dumas, père, would have, but it is a kind of drawing-room novel with plenty of psychology and questions that need to be answered. The story begins with Marguerite's estate sale, so it is no spoiler to say that she dies in the course of the story, but this is no more a tragedy than Cyrano de Bergerac. This reviewer did read the book in French, but like Les Misérables, the English translations usually have kept the French title.

La Dame Aux Camélias French Edition Alexandre Dumas fils 9781271345625 Books Reviews
This is, of course, the novel upon which La Traviata is based. Ithere are considerabl differences, though, apart from the addition of music. Of great interest is dumas's analysis of the economic requirements of a courtesan's lifestyle, and th limitations this placed, both on her social life as well as on her heart.
Good book to get a picture of the life and moral value of the french elite during the 19th century. It is a classic and a quick read.
This is not what was advertised !
The description says
"La Dame Aux Camelias (Camille) (French Edition) (Paperback) by Alexandre Dumas (Author) "
This implies that this is the NOVEL not the Play.
Instead I received the stage play of the story (in French and English,) NOT the original novel. Furthermore, the quality of this "reprint from the collection of the University of Michigan Library" is poor and is literally a collection of photocopies of the text of the play published in 1880. Although historically it may be interesting for someone, ( described " as presented by Sarah Bernhardt" ) it is not at all what was described.
I am returning this immediately since it can not be used for the French lit class for which it is needed.
La Dame aux Camélias is a classic. A lot has been written about this work and about its author Dumas. I can not add nothing to this wonderful novel, then a piece of theater and ultimately an opera by Verdi. What is a wonderful chance is the oportunity to have it in its original french version in my kindle. This is an added value to the library that offers to readers. Thank you!
Enjoyable enough of a book, but it requires some concentration if you are naturally English-speaking.
I have read this novel in the Spanish version and I liked it very much. Now I want to read it in the original language. I rate the work and the service rendered by with five stars, because of the excellence and the expedite way with which it makes possible to enjoy this book, at a very affordable price.
Reading in French has revealed new aspects of the life of courtesans, and is revealing French mentality and passion. I said Chapter 10 is worth the whole book, but in French one gets the description in a way that leaves the heart aching. If you know any French and love Dumas, I suggest this version!
